The customer, a world-leading security screening solutions provider, faced the challenge of developing a specialized X-ray sensor processing device for their security CT scanners. This complex embedded system needed to determine 3D object structure and perform material decomposition using photon-counting CT. They engaged the vendor, Promwad, to develop this critical hardware.

Promwad designed an FPGA-based solution centered on an Opal Kelly XEM7310 SoM with a Xilinx Artix-7 FPGA. They created a modular motherboard to carry synchronized measurement boards, developed the accompanying software architecture, and engineered a custom mechanical enclosure. The results for the customer included a system with small pixels optimized for security scanning, the ability to perform more accurate material decomposition, and a high layout density of measuring boards.
