Clariant, a global chemicals company, faced the challenge of modernizing its production automation at its Gersthofen plant to eliminate inefficient island solutions and improve process efficiency and transparency. The difficulty was implementing these changes without interrupting ongoing operations, as shutdowns were extremely costly. To address this, Clariant partnered with vendor ProLeiT to implement its Plant iT software system, including the Plant Direct iT process control system and Plant Acquis iT production data acquisition module.

ProLeiT’s solution utilized its modular Plant iT software and high-availability SIMATIC S7-400FH controllers with the "Configuration in RUN" feature, allowing hardware and software upgrades without stopping production. This provided Clariant with better process control, comprehensive data management via a SQL server, and enhanced plant safety and security. The implementation achieved the key result of full control over running processes and created a foundation for future integration with commercial ERP systems like SAP R/3.
