iControl Networks partnered with Progress UX Research to improve the first-time user experience for their Piper smart home security device. The challenge was to ensure new customers felt confident and capable during the initial unboxing, setup, and installation process, rather than becoming frustrated and abandoning the product.

Progress UX Research implemented a comprehensive out-of-box experience study, conducting in-home usability testing to observe real customers. This approach identified key points of confusion and opportunities for improvement across the hardware, packaging, and mobile app. The findings directly informed design changes that resulted in a smoother and more intuitive first-time experience for new customers.
