Practice Alternatives, a healthcare practice management provider, struggled to make patient billing clearer and more transparent for customers. Its existing process only gave limited yes-or-no insurance coverage answers, leaving patients and practices unsure about costs, coverage details, and payment expectations. The company used Progress Software’s DataDirect alongside its OpenEdge-based billing solution, Rexpert, to address the challenge.

Progress Software implemented DataDirect to convert complex X12 EDI messages into JSON and plain-English code descriptions that could be shown in a more user-friendly HTML results page. The integration took about one week and was rolled out gradually, improving billing transparency and helping patients make better care and payment decisions. The solution also created a new revenue stream for Practice Alternatives through a web service for outside customers, and users reported the new experience was “100% better.”
