A Progress Case Study
üstra Hannoversche Verkehrsbetriebe AG, Hanover’s leading public transport operator (about 154 million passengers yearly, ~1,900 employees), needed to centrally monitor a wide, fiber‑connected infrastructure—destination signs, ticket machines, emergency call stations, video surveillance and traffic systems—after migrating to a heterogeneous network of switches and devices. The challenge was an open, scalable monitoring solution that could read device and database values across both modern and legacy systems and support 24/7 operations across multiple organizations.
üstra deployed Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold to monitor switches, servers, SQL‑integrated devices and 325 upgraded ticket machines (each with ~25 monitor points), and now monitors roughly 2,200 devices with 5,000+ active monitors. The system provides daily reports and real‑time email/SMS alerts, enabling more efficient staffing and maintenance scheduling, faster incident response, better use of consumables, fewer false excuses for fare evasion, and a redundant backup monitoring instance for high availability.
