Top Medical School Consolidates Network Monitoring with WhatsUp Gold

Cambridge University’s School of Clinical Medicine, a leading medical school with about 2,500 staff across a large campus, faced delays and complexity from multiple, fragmented network monitors that made it hard to ensure continuous availability of email, AD, websites, databases and a rapidly growing wireless environment. IT needed a scalable, centrally managed solution that could also monitor environmental sensors and provide reliable out-of-hours alerts.

After a short trial, the school deployed Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold across an initial 300 devices, consolidating monitoring into a single pane of glass with automated Layer 2/3 discovery and mapping. The new system simplified staff training and alerting, improved wireless performance by spotting rogue devices and bandwidth abusers, added environmental and SMS alerts for off-hours incidents, and delivered better visibility and scalability with strong vendor support.
