A Progress Case Study
Knowledge IT, a Tyne and Wear–based VAR, MSP and ISP with a Tier Three data center, had long used Ipswitch’s WhatsUpGold to monitor its own network. When the company decided to offer managed network monitoring to customers, the key challenge was how to remotely monitor multiple, disparate customer networks without being directly connected to them and to do so in a scalable, reliable way.
Knowledge IT solved this by deploying on-site probes that act as virtual engineers and report to a central WhatsUpGold MSP instance—so the system monitors the probes rather than thousands of individual devices. This two-layer “watching the watcher” approach is quickly scalable (new probes and full monitoring in about two weeks), provides real-time alerts and geographic fault location, and enabled rapid incident response (for example resolving a football-club network fault before halftime). The service created a new revenue stream, lowered per-device costs, expanded the company’s portfolio, and delivered higher, more reliable service levels.
