Ipswitch Lifts Off for International Space Station

Ipswitch, maker of the WS_FTP secure file transfer solution, was selected to provide secure, reliable network file transfer for experiments in the European Columbus laboratory on the International Space Station. The challenge was to move large volumes of scientific data (hundreds of megabytes per experimental cycle) with minimal crew time while ensuring security, stability and ease of use for long-duration missions.

The company installed WS_FTP Professional on the flight hard disk of the MARES experiment so data could be transferred automatically and securely from the device to an onboard monitoring laptop and then downlinked to Cadmos/CNES on Earth, with WS_FTP Server managing onboard moves. The solution was chosen for its security and stability, supports multi-year commissioning and automated downlinks, and met mission requirements for reliable, low-touch data transfer.
