Helping WakeMed Bypass EHR Bottlenecks to Enable Faster Consults

WakeMed faced delays and misrouted specialist consults because their EHR had no automated way to deliver or alert consulting physicians, forcing staff to rely on phones, paging, or secretaries and producing insecure or incomplete messages. To solve this, WakeMed engaged Proficient Health to deploy PH Connect with Intelligent Consult Notification (ICN) functionality.

Proficient Health integrated PH Connect with the EHR to intelligently route consults (based on provider availability, schedules, workflows and other factors), send real-time notifications, and preserve ordering workflows so clinicians could request consults from the EHR as usual. The result: thousands of consults now flow through PH Connect with read and response times as fast as two to three minutes, faster time-to-consult and improved ALOS across the hospital, with multiple services already benefiting and plans to expand system-wide.
