Filling the Gap in Smart Home Networking Education with a New Certification

Control4, a global leader in smart home automation, faced a major skills gap: technicians lacked formal training in home networking even as IoT growth increased device demand. To launch the Pakedge Certified Network Administrator (PCNA) program—a hands-on, industry-rigorous certification—Control4 needed a scalable, low-cost way to deliver and secure exams, so they partnered with ProctorU for live online proctoring (selected for cost, ease of use, and API/webhook integration).

Control4 built a hybrid model that ships Pakedge hardware to students for hands-on labs and uses psychometrically designed assessments overseen by ProctorU’s online proctoring. The results: more than 2,000 enrollments in under 11 months (a ~300% increase over the 500 expected), roughly 1,000 exam attempts with about 850 passing (meeting the ~80% first-time pass goal), millions saved in facility costs, and a noticeable drop in support calls for minor networking issues — all enabled by ProctorU’s proctoring service.
