University Hospitals of Leicester improves Patient outcomes

University Hospitals of Leicester, one of the largest NHS teaching trusts, needed a better way to assess children arriving in its emergency department. The hospital wanted to quickly identify urgent cases, safely discharge low-risk patients, and reduce costs, but adult-focused scoring systems were not suitable for pediatric care. Presidion was not involved in this case; the vendor used was IBM, alongside IBM SPSS software and IBM Global Business Services.

IBM helped University Hospitals of Leicester validate and improve its Pediatric Observation Priority Score (POPS) by integrating patient data with score data and analyzing more than 20,000 records. The solution showed that POPS could reliably predict illness severity, hospital stay length, and readmission risk, helping doctors prioritize treatment and avoid unnecessary admissions. IBM’s analytics also indicated up to a 10 percent reduction in hospital stay costs for low-risk patients, while improving resource planning and patient outcomes.
