The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives Expands its Capacity to Manage and Preserve Valuable Digital Records with Preservica

The Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives (KDLA) is one of the largest state archives in the U.S. and has long managed a growing e-Archives of websites, publications, GIS datasets, images, audio and video. Faced with rapidly changing file formats, rising volumes of complex digital records, manual and labor-intensive ingest and integrity checks, limited IT resources, and the need to meet trusted‑repository standards, KDLA needed a more automated, sustainable way to preserve and provide access to permanent state records.

After a trial and vendor review, KDLA selected Preservica’s cloud-based preservation platform for automated technical metadata capture, format migration, distributed storage and site maintenance with minimal on‑site IT overhead. Since adopting Preservica in 2013 KDLA has automated many preservation workflows, improved provenance and format‑migration tracking, begun integrating with its DSpace repository, and gained scalable, cost‑effective capacity to manage complex digital collections while influencing product development to meet their needs.
