Swiss Federal Archives - Customer Case Study

The Swiss Federal Archives (SFA) needed a robust, end-to-end digital preservation system to secure and manage a rapidly growing body of electronic records (12.5 TB by 2008) while preserving original file structures, ensuring traceability and meeting strict security and scalability requirements. After a market review and prior collaboration in EU projects, SFA selected Preservica to help specify and build a Digital Information Repository that would integrate with existing systems and support long-term access.

Preservica implemented its Enterprise Edition with Active Preservation technology, customized to keep archival information packages intact, add advanced format identification and integrity checks, and meet the SFA’s security protocols (triple storage, protected network access, role-based controls). Delivered on time and on budget and deployed in 2009, the solution improved format management, automated metadata exchange with the SFA’s AIS, enforced traceability and authenticity, and positioned the archive to scale as government records become increasingly digital.
