Case Study: The Rockefeller Foundation strengthens food security with Premise

A Premise Case Study

Strengthening food security by monitoring post-harvest losses

The Rockefeller Foundation worked with Premise to support a $130 million initiative to reduce post-harvest food loss in Kenya’s mango sector. The challenge was to get better data on mango prices, spoilage, and the food handling practices of growers and traders so the project could be more effectively guided.

Premise monitored the Kenyan mango market by collecting data on prices, spoilage rates, and handling practices across 9 cities, generating 18,000 observations on a basket of 19 items including 4 mango products. The findings showed that 15% of mango harvest volume was rejected for low quality, 4% was discarded because it went unsold, only 10% of fruit traders used cold storage, and 87% reported losses from fruit fly issues.
