Case Study: Gates Foundation’s Financial Services improves financial access targeting in Lagos with Premise data mapping

A Premise Case Study

Preview of the Gates Foundation’s Financial Services Case Study

Analyzing access to financial services

Gates Foundation’s Financial Services team partnered with Premise to better understand access to financial services in Lagos, Nigeria. Their challenge was to map financial service access points across the city so they could improve intervention targeting in areas where low-income populations may be underserved.

Premise sourced and validated field data across Lagos over a 2-month project using its data collection and mapping approach, generating 40,342 observations and 12,434 validated financial access points. The results showed that mobile money venues were 15% more likely to serve populations in poverty than traditional access points, and that they accepted smaller deposits, indicating stronger reach into lower-income areas. Premise’s purchasing power indicator also found a negative correlation between consumer prices and the presence of Mobile Money and Motor Park venues.
