A Praxis EMR Case Study
Western Anesthesiology Associates (Western Anesthesiology Associates, Inc.), led by pain specialist Dr. Thomas Johans, needed a way to manage complex chronic pain care across four offices while meeting strict narcotics documentation laws, handling extensive procedure notes and imaging, and cutting rising chart-storage costs. Physicians preferred dictation over direct computer entry, and most EMRs were template-driven or required high typing/voice-recognition skills—none fit the workflow of a busy pain practice seeing high patient and procedure volumes.
Implementing Praxis’ template-free, adaptable EMR with its concept processor allowed dictated notes to be transcribed directly into a learning system that auto-completes recurring information, while also managing scanned images, questionnaires, prescriptions and scheduling. Clinic-wide since 1999, Praxis delivers same-day note turnaround (handling roughly 100 patients and 30–50 procedures daily, 300–500 pages), improved legibility and compliance, streamlined workflows, reduced storage overhead, and the ability to demonstrate evidence-based quality of care.
