Indiana University Faculty Increases Student Engagement With Explainer Videos

Indiana University Southeast, part of Indiana University, was looking for a more engaging way to teach complex topics in its Communication Law courses, especially in fully asynchronous online classes. Professor Adam Maksl turned to Powtoon, using its video creation tools through Indiana University’s Kaltura integration, to move beyond traditional lecture capture and better hold students’ attention.

With Powtoon, Maksl created short explainer videos with voiceover, music, animations, and characters that broke down difficult concepts into bite-sized lessons. The results were strong: Powtoon videos earned 2x more views than traditional lecture capture videos, averaged 81% completion versus 63%, and 75% of students said the videos were useful and engaging, helping drive a 60% uplift in student engagement.
