PowerSchool Special Education partnered with York Region District School Board, a large Ontario district serving 125,000 students, to address an aging, in‑house special education system that was creating duplication, paper-driven workflows, and long delays—most notably SEA equipment claims that could take up to 12 months. The board needed a modern, secure, scalable solution that would integrate with its Student Information System and support 19,000 special education students and 1,100+ staff across many disciplines.
YRDSB implemented PowerSchool Special Education, a web-based, mobile-optimized, SIS-integrated case management platform that centralized records, automated approvals, and enabled bidirectional data exchange. The rollout cut SEA claim processing from months to weeks, eliminated redundant data entry, improved collaboration, accountability and reporting, and freed staff to spend more time directly supporting students.
