Jane H. Bryan Elementary School - Customer Case Study

PowerSchool Assessment, a web-based instructional improvement system, helped Jane H. Bryan Elementary in Hampton, VA, address critically low math performance: the school was “Accredited with Warning,” identified as a federal priority school, and only about 30 percent of students passed the 2012 state math assessment. The student population faced high needs—89 percent were economically disadvantaged, had disabilities, or were English language learners—so leaders needed timely, standards‑aligned formative data to pinpoint gaps and drive instruction.

By embedding PowerSchool Assessment into an eight‑component turnaround (positive behavior supports, visible leadership, deep item‑level data analysis, weekly triage meetings, targeted interventions and RTI, collaborative planning, and student ownership of learning), Bryan used common formative assessments and dashboards to monitor progress and tailor instruction. Outcomes were dramatic: 4th grade math passing rose from 22 percent to 76 percent (a 54‑point gain), many students posted 50–100+ point gains on state summative tests, and overall math proficiency increased substantially across grades.
