Large U.S. Water Utility Automates Asset Investment Optimization

WSSC, the Maryland-based water and wastewater utility serving about 1.8 million customers, was facing frequent infrastructure failures (3,760 breaks and leaks in 2010–2011) and needed to modernize asset investment decision-making. To support its $20 million, multi‑phase asset optimization program, WSSC selected PowerPlan and its Asset Investment Optimization suite to improve capital planning and lifecycle management.

PowerPlan installed and configured the solution, loading data for more than $15 billion of assets, integrated it with Oracle WAM, Esri GIS and other source systems, and deployed it on WSSC’s IBM WebSphere and Oracle Exadata framework. The project finished on time and within budget, automated WSSC’s capital plan, reduced reliance on external consultants, gave staff direct control of planning, and improved the efficiency and flexibility of asset investment decisions.
