Horizon Utilities, a major electricity distributor in Ontario, faced the challenge of replacing thousands of traditional electricity meters with smart meters as part of an energy conservation initiative. They needed a way to accurately capture data during the installation process to prevent errors and track contractor performance. To meet this need, they worked with vendor Powerfleet and utilized its FieldWorker software on handheld devices.

Powerfleet configured its FieldWorker Enterprise platform to allow meter installers to use a single handheld device to both scan barcodes on the new meters and take photos of the final readings. This integration eliminated keying errors and reduced discrepancies. The solution provided Horizon with a cost-effective way to automate its service order system, track installation times, and gather data to optimize the process for replacing hundreds of thousands of additional meters.
