Case Study: Roblox achieves resiliency and scale for 70 million gamers with Portworx

A Portworx Case Study

Preview of the Roblox Case Study

Roblox Builds a Platform for 70 Million Gamers with Portworx and HashiCorp Nomad

Roblox, the gaming and entertainment platform with 70 million monthly active players, needed to maintain global availability and performance, prevent data loss during large-scale failures, and scale its data platform without a proportional increase in headcount. To address persistent storage for containerized, stateful services running on HashiCorp Nomad, Roblox selected Portworx (PX-Enterprise) as its cloud-native storage and data management solution.

Portworx enabled Roblox to treat stateful databases and services like stateless workloads by providing encrypted volumes, snapshots, centralized management via Portworx Lighthouse, and robust replication: tests with three replicas continued operating after taking nodes offline. Portworx’s support and engineering partnership simplified operations (initial cluster setup in two hours), improved resiliency and failover, and let Roblox rebuild a breached or failed POP—including game servers and logs—in one hour or less while scaling toward thousands of nodes.
