Aurea Software Goes Beyond the Limits of Amazon EBS to Run 200 Kubernetes Stateful Pods Per Host

Aurea Software, which runs a centralized Kubernetes platform for 80 SaaS companies, faced the challenge of running large numbers of stateful containers on AWS—targeting 200–500 pods and persistent volumes per host—while being constrained by Amazon EBS’s ~40-volume limit and struggling with traditional SDS solutions. To support multi-tenant databases and variable workload types (Cassandra, Kafka, PostgreSQL, etc.), Aurea sought a cloud‑native storage solution and evaluated several options before choosing Portworx.

Portworx delivered a cloud-native storage and data management layer for Kubernetes that bypassed the EBS volume limit and enabled Aurea to run 200+ container volumes per EC2 instance (with tests up to 500), increasing cluster density and isolation for multi-tenant workloads. As a result, Aurea achieved 60–90% compute cost savings, reported Portworx as 30–50% cheaper than other storage options tested, and realized roughly 5x savings in operations and development by consolidating 80 SaaS apps on a single Kubernetes platform.
