General Bank of Canada, a rapidly growing specialty auto lender (25% compounded annual growth; an asset base approaching $500M and profitable in 14 months), faced the twin challenges of managing credit risk during the 2008 financial crisis and diversifying funding while scaling loan originations. To gain the necessary loan intelligence and real-time portfolio visibility it turned to Portfolio Plus, implementing the Portfolio Plus Prospector analytics platform to monitor default characteristics, loan duration, risk grades and cashflow behavior.
Portfolio Plus Prospector gave General Bank the ability to spot problematic dealer behavior (early payoffs), re-price and reengineer credit decisions, and match deposit raising to actual loan paydowns—reducing credit losses and cutting funding costs by as much as 70 basis points on shifted amounts. With Portfolio Plus analytics the bank expanded to over 1,000 authorized dealers, expected loan funding to top $1 billion by 2012, and is now deploying a Portfolio Plus interface to Dealertrack to further increase origination volume with the same staffing levels.
