How Valley Health successfully launched an internal mobile app

Valley Health, a not-for-profit health system of hospitals, urgent cares, and physician practices across West Virginia, Maryland, and Virginia, faced a communications gap: many frontline clinical and support staff don’t have regular computer access to email and were missing internal updates. Valley Health had been using Poppulo to power a weekly employee newsletter since 2016 but needed a secure, mobile-first channel that employees would actually download and use.

Valley Health chose Poppulo to design and build a branded internal mobile app, piloting it with 60 volunteers, integrating tools like Shift Wizard, and running an “Appy New Year” rollout with hospital download events. The Poppulo-built app provided daily news, seamless integration with the existing platform, and secure access; it surpassed Valley Health’s goal of 1,000 downloads within the first six months and became a key channel for timely COVID-19 communications.
