A Pomeroy Case Study
Montgomery County, a large Pennsylvania county with about 800,000 residents and 3,000 employees, faced major challenges supporting hundreds of field-based mobile workers: unsecured access to sensitive data, unreliable VPN/wireless connectivity that forced employees to return to offices to file reports, and rising travel and overtime costs. To address these issues the county engaged Pomeroy to extend virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) capabilities beyond the 911 center to mobile staff.
Pomeroy designed, built and piloted an HP- and VMware-based VDI with redundant production and DR data centers, VMware vSphere/Horizon View virtual desktops, Tintri storage and NVIDIA GRID graphics, testing a 200-user pilot across roles. The Pomeroy solution drove measurable gains—300% more Aging & Adult Services visits/day, a ten-fold increase in warrants served with a 10% overtime reduction, 300% more restaurant inspections/day, a 40% increase in Juvenile Probation visits, and over $30,000 saved by using mobile workstations—leading Montgomery County to plan rollout to 2,800 users and an expected ~40% productivity improvement.
