Large State Department of Education - Customer Case Study

Large State Department of Education faced aging desktops, limited district funding, rapid enrollment growth and a seven-person IT staff overwhelmed by time-consuming onsite support and failing tape-based backups. Pomeroy was engaged to provide K–12 technology services, delivering a desktop virtualization (VDI) and server virtualization strategy to modernize classrooms and the central data center within a public-sector budget.

Pomeroy implemented a two-year, multi‑phase plan starting with a 150‑desktop proof of concept that expanded to over 1,000 virtual desktops, replacing roughly 800 legacy machines with zero and thin clients, virtualizing 16 servers and ~20 TB of storage, and replacing tape backups with disk‑based replication. The deployment eliminated a projected $75,000 capital expense, cut hardware and software support costs by 50%, achieved a 99% improvement in IT resource capacity (reducing staff from seven to one and shrinking software deployment cycles from 34 days to two hours), and delivered significant energy savings and improved disaster recovery under Pomeroy’s solution.
