Case Study: University of Delaware teaches environmental justice with PolicyMap

University of Delaware, working with PolicyMap, needed a way to teach environmental justice to students who were not majoring in geography or the social sciences. In Dr. Victor Perez’s course, “Sociology of Diagnosis and Environment and Health,” the challenge was to make complex geographic and social patterns understandable and engaging.

PolicyMap provided its 3 Layer Map tool so students could visualize how race, poverty, and brownfield data overlap and concentrate in specific areas. Using PolicyMap, Dr. Perez was able to identify neighborhoods in Wilmington that appeared to be located in polluted areas, giving students a real-data, interactive way to explore environmental injustice.
