United Airlines sought to improve the passenger experience and increase retail engagement at its major hub, Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The challenge involved navigating the complex indoor environment and providing accurate, real-time wayfinding, which their initial indoor positioning system from another vendor was unable to deliver. This led United Airlines to partner with vendor Pointr and its Deep Location® platform to find a solution.
Pointr implemented its accurate indoor positioning technology, achieving a precise blue-dot with 1-meter accuracy by utilizing the airport's existing Aruba beacon infrastructure at no extra cost. The solution enabled turn-by-turn navigation, seamless indoor-outdoor transitions, and targeted location-based push notifications for passengers. As a result, United Airlines improved wayfinding, reduced traveler anxiety, and increased non-aeronautical revenue through more effective passenger engagement with retail offerings.
