Scrutinizer Helps Bloomington Public Schools Pinpoint and Stop a Virus

Bloomington Public Schools turned to Plixer and its Scrutinizer NetFlow & sFlow Analyzer when a rapidly spreading virus infected more than 100 machines across the district’s highly distributed, mostly virtual network. With 10 sites, multiple user groups, and strict student cyber-safety requirements, the IT team needed better visibility into suspicious traffic and a faster way to trace the source of the outbreak.

Using Plixer’s Scrutinizer, the district created filters for SMTP traffic and subnet activity targeting known botnet sites, allowing staff to identify every infected machine in less than an hour. The result was faster containment of the AV2009 virus, improved daily monitoring of bandwidth and traffic anomalies, and better control over educational and policy-compliant network use across Bloomington Public Schools.
