Flybe Ltd., a UK regional airline with 3,000 staff across 14 bases and 37 airports, was struggling with poor website performance and limited visibility into what was consuming bandwidth. The company needed to understand whether heavy traffic hitting its ecommerce site was legitimate, and it turned to Plixer’s Scrutinizer for network traffic insight.

Plixer helped Flybe enable NetFlow and sFlow reporting on Cisco routers and HP Procurve switches so the IT team could identify who was “sweeping” the site. With Scrutinizer, Flybe discovered that flight comparison and reseller sites were consuming more than 125 MB per hour in some cases; the airline then worked with larger sites to shift data collection to a separate web services platform. The result was improved user experience, reduced server and energy waste, and additional revenue by keeping the website fast and accessible.
