Plexus Corp. was engaged by a major healthcare and life sciences OEM to help capture early market share in the HPV diagnostics space. The customer's challenge was to rapidly develop an automated decapper/recapper sample prep system. This non-assay system was needed to automate tedious manual tasks performed by lab operators, which were known to cause carpal tunnel issues, and to secure floor space for their diagnostic assay equipment.

Plexus designed, developed, and manufactured the complex system, which integrated 29 axes of motion and various components. By leveraging learnings from a concurrent project and maintaining close collaboration, Plexus helped introduce the system to production in less than three years. The solution automated sample handling, preventing workplace injuries and allowing for faster, more reliable processing. This enabled the customer to successfully launch their HPV diagnostic assay and capture market share with a system that met all regulatory requirements.
