A Planview Case Study
The University of Utah, a major public research university serving over 28,000 students, faced pressure to demonstrate financial accountability and improve IT governance after an informal IT assessment revealed gaps in how IT investments were prioritized and managed. With more than 1,700 concurrent projects, the university lacked a systematic way to prioritize initiatives, gain visibility, centralize project management, and align IT work with institutional goals.
To address this, the university’s IT Project & Portfolio Office implemented parallel portfolio and project management processes and selected Planview Enterprise as the centralized PPM tool. By defining a simple project lifecycle, engaging executive sponsors and cross‑divisional teams, and training the IT organization, they consolidated projects by 95% (from 1,700 to 76), improved real‑time reporting and decision‑making, better aligned resources with strategic priorities, and raised overall project management maturity.
