HS2 Harnesses Untapped Ingenuity to Deliver UK’s Largest Ever Infrastructure Project

HS2, the UK’s national high‑speed rail program, is one of Europe’s largest and most complex infrastructure projects, involving over 2,000 suppliers and running across three phases. To modernize capacity and deliver a world‑class railway, HS2 needed a way to capture and scale ideas from across its vast supply chain and workforce rather than rely on ad hoc suggestions.

Using Planview IdeaPlace and Planview’s Innovation and Work Management solutions, HS2 launched an Innovation Hub and collaborative workspaces to manage ideas from ideation through feasibility to rollout. The program now engages over 7,000 users, has run 100+ challenges, captured 3,000+ ideas and supports 100+ active projects; HS2 has invested £7m in innovations, delivered £112m savings in 2021, and projects £800m savings by end of Phase One and £2bn across all phases.
