Farmers Insurance Adjusts Resource Capacity to Reduce Project Risk

Farmers Insurance, a national insurer serving over 10 million households with nearly 24,000 employees and 50,000 agents, faced chronic project delays, cost overruns and scope erosion across a $130M portfolio of about 40 projects due to poor resource visibility and last‑minute work. The Program Management Group needed a more disciplined, proactive way to manage competing demand for people’s time and reduce project risk.

Working with Planview Enterprise and a six‑step resource management plan, the PMO captured all demand types, enforced timesheets, used allocation and capacity modules to assign the right people to the right work, validated forecasts against actuals, and presented clear capacity views to executives. The result: project managers’ time spent on projects rose from ~60% to over 80%, timesheet compliance improved to under 1% non‑compliance, and the organization gained transparency, better prioritization, cost savings, fewer delays, and higher employee satisfaction.
