Driving Innovation in Healthcare to Deliver a Remarkable Patient Experience

Novant Health is a not‑for‑profit integrated healthcare system of 25,000 employees and physician partners operating 13 hospitals and ~355 clinics across the Southeast with a single vision: deliver a remarkable patient experience. Faced with fragmented care teams, professional and geographic silos, and slow innovation cycles, Novant needed a way to decentralize innovation to frontline clinicians, capture their stories, and cut development time from years to months.

Novant deployed the Planview Spigit crowdsourcing platform, running time‑boxed challenges (initially focused on nursing), integrating online feedback into offline huddles, and using badges and roles to drive cross‑disciplinary engagement. The program quickly produced actionable ideas, built local innovation leaders, and met its cycle‑time target—shrinking product development to about eight weeks—while strengthening leadership support for continuous, front‑line‑driven improvement.
