BMW Group Expands into New Markets by Using Value Stream Management to Improve Agility, Efficiency, and Quality

The BMW Group, a global leader in premium automobiles with major operations including its Chinese joint venture BMW Brilliance Automotive, faced the challenge of replicating its German R&D processes in China amid a company-wide Agile transformation. To succeed in the Chinese market, BMW needed cloud-ready, scalable, and secure toolchains, high-performance simulation infrastructure, and reliable data supply from Germany to its Shenyang simulation center to support E/E testing, distributed collaboration, and consistent Agile workflows.

Working with Planview Tasktop, BMW implemented value stream management and integrated toolchains that linked software and engineering data across geographies (including Jira-to-Jira and simulation data flows). This enabled faster software integration, consistent Agile data, and deeper process insights via Tasktop Viz; the simulation project finished one year ahead of schedule despite COVID, accelerating time-to-insight and improving the organization’s ability to identify bottlenecks and continuously improve.
