Premera Blue Cross Transforms their Business by Nurturing a Culture of Innovation

Premera Blue Cross, the largest health plan in the Pacific Northwest serving more than two million members across Washington, Oregon and Alaska, needed a way to capture employee ideas to solve customer pain points and modernize care. With 3,200 employees spread across four campuses and 900 telecommuters, the company lacked a collaborative, trackable system to give all staff a voice and drive an innovation culture.

Premera deployed Planview Spigit company-wide to crowdsource ideas, enabling submission, collaboration and pairwise voting to surface the best concepts. The six-week launch generated nearly 450 ideas (more than 400 total) with 73% employee participation and almost 11,000 votes; a cross-functional committee used Spigit’s scoring to prioritize the top 30 ideas and the company has begun delivering employee-generated solutions—such as comfort boxes, baby boxes and efforts to reduce surprise medical bills—while building a sustainable innovation pipeline.
