Crowdsourcing Solutions to Turn Gridlock Into Green Lights

Siemens, a 170‑year‑old global leader in electrification, automation and digitalization with thousands of R&D staff, wanted to tackle urban traffic problems—congestion, parking inefficiency and environmental impact—but needed a single innovation platform usable across business units and capable of engaging external experts and the public.

Siemens implemented Planview Spigit and launched the global Mobility IDEA Contest to crowdsource solutions from professionals, students and the community; the competition produced three student winners, including a first‑place drone concept to locate parking and guide drivers, spurred university software grants and a planned prototyping workshop, and led Siemens to continue using Spigit for ongoing internal and external innovation programs.
