A PlanIT Geo Case Study
The State of New Mexico, through its Forestry Division, faced significant challenges in managing its urban forests, particularly in the city of Las Vegas. A rapidly declining and aging tree population, lack of city funding, and insufficient qualified staff created a public safety hazard and a dwindling tree canopy. To address this, the state and local volunteer tree board utilized PlanIT Geo's TreePlotter INVENTORY software, purchased via a grant, to conduct a detailed assessment and advocate for necessary resources.
PlanIT Geo's TreePlotter INVENTORY provided a map-based, web-accessible platform that streamlined data collection, often using volunteers. The software generated instant, easy-to-understand visualizations, charts, and maps that were used to effectively communicate the urgent state of the urban forest and its associated risks to city leadership. This data-driven approach became an invaluable tool for advocacy and education. As a result, the state and city gained a crucial baseline inventory to guide hazard tree removal, inform future planning, and support the case for dedicated municipal funding, though securing a long-term budget remains an ongoing challenge.
