Flyclops switched to PlanetScale to handle 100% growth without a DBA

Flyclops, a Philadelphia-based game studio behind casual multiplayer hits like Domino! and Why Are We Running?, needed a better way to manage 1.5TB of rapidly growing legacy data across 11 years of game activity. Running on AWS Aurora, the team was facing expensive and limited support, no DBA on staff, memory-bound workloads that were hard to tune, and little confidence in making schema changes safely as traffic and user growth continued.

Flyclops switched to PlanetScale’s MySQL-compatible, serverless database platform with migration tooling, replication, auto-failover, and expert support to move its production data without changing application code. The result was easier day-to-day development, stronger confidence in schema changes, faster shipping, and cost savings versus hiring DBAs, with Flyclops also saying its PlanetScale deployment can safely handle more than twice its current workload.
