Unveiling Aquatic Mysteries Charting Blue Carbon With Planet Data

Umitron, a company empowering aquaculture through technology, faced the significant challenge of mapping blue carbon ecosystems. Traditional field survey methods were too labor-intensive, costly, and difficult to scale across large coastal zones, which limited the availability of crucial data for environmental planning. To overcome this, Umitron sought to leverage Planet's satellite remote sensing capabilities.

Umitron utilized PlanetScope satellite imagery from Planet due to its high-frequency updates and spatial resolution, which were essential for accurately mapping seagrass. This solution allowed Umitron to efficiently create blue carbon maps over a 100 km² area, a task previously deemed too arduous. The results were substantial; Umitron successfully estimated blue carbon quantities and discovered previously unknown seagrass beds. Planet's data is helping to accelerate efforts to quantify and increase blue carbon, paving the way for global adoption of this efficient mapping approach.
