Case Study: Brandenburg Forestry Authority improves forest monitoring and cuts field search time with Planet imagery

Randenburg Forestry Authority Protecting and Maintaining State Woodlands With Broad-area Imagery

The Brandenburg Forestry Authority needed to better monitor and protect its 273,000 hectares of state forest. Its primary challenge was the labor-intensive and often ineffective process of detecting and delineating pest infestations, a task made difficult by cloudy weather that obscured traditional satellite imagery during critical springtime windows.

Planet provided a solution with its high-frequency satellite imagery and analysis. This enabled the authority to accurately detect forest health issues and create detailed maps, which were integrated into its existing Forest Information System. The results included a 60% reduction in time spent on ground searches, a decrease in the amount and cost of insecticide used through targeted applications, and enhanced planning for salvage logging. Planet’s service made evidence-based decision-making more transparent for the public and partner organizations.
