Quantifying the Impact of Landscape Regreening With Planetary Variables

Justdiggit, an NGO focused on regreening African landscapes, faced the challenge of needing to quantify the impact of its land restoration projects. They sought to translate their work into tangible, credible metrics like water volume retained to demonstrate effectiveness to donors and partners. To achieve this, they partnered with vendor Planet and leveraged its Planetary Variables data feeds, including Soil Water Content and Land Surface Temperature.

Planet provided the solution by delivering accurate, near-daily satellite data to measure changes in soil moisture and vegetation health over time. By comparing intervention sites with control sites, Planet's data quantified a consistent increase in soil water content, a decrease in land surface temperature, and significant vegetation growth. This allowed Justdiggit to credibly measure its impact, reporting results in understandable metrics that have been crucial for securing funding and scaling its initiatives across Africa.
