Protecting Public Lands With Planet Data

The New Mexico State Land Office (NMSLO), a government agency responsible for managing millions of acres of public land, faced challenges in monitoring large territories for permit violations and assessing widespread wildfire damage. To overcome the limitations of costly and slow traditional methods, NMSLO partnered with Planet to utilize its satellite imagery and analytics.

Planet provided its Road Change Detection Analytic feed, powered by near-daily satellite imagery, to automatically identify unpermitted road construction. This solution, integrated into NMSLO's workflows with help from Planet's Professional Services, enabled the agency to detect 222 infractions and identify approximately $1 million in trespass violations. Planet data was also used to monitor burn scars after devastating wildfires, aiding in damage assessment and restoration planning.
