A Planar Systems Case Study
The University of Illinois at Chicago needed a next-generation immersive data-visualization environment to replace its projection-based CAVE and support high-resolution 2D/3D interactive analysis. To meet requirements for seamless panoramic viewing, accurate off-axis vertical viewing, lower operating cost and easier maintenance, UIC worked with Planar Systems to deploy its Clarity Matrix 3D LCD video wall technology.
Planar Systems supplied 72 46" Clarity Matrix 3D displays in an 18x4 circular CAVE2 configuration with Planar’s EasyAxis mounting, creating a ~24-foot, 320-degree surround that delivers 37 megapixels in 3D (74 MP in 2D), 20/20 horizontal acuity, 7.3 mm image gaps and less-than-4" depth. The installation eliminated ghosting, extended backlight life to 50,000 hours (25× longer than the previous projection bulbs), dramatically reduced alignment and service time, and enabled more accurate, cost-effective interactive analysis for research and decision-making.
