National Air and Space Museum - Customer Case Study

The National Air and Space Museum needed to present live, ultra‑high‑resolution telescopic images of the sun’s outer atmosphere to millions of visitors in a low‑light walkway while meeting strict brightness, alignment, heat and 24x7 reliability requirements. Working with the Harvard‑Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and integrator Avitecture, the museum selected Planar Systems’ Clarity Matrix Video Wall (MX55HDS) to meet those demands.

Planar Systems delivered a 2x3 array of 55‑inch Clarity Matrix displays mounted with the Planar EasyAxis system and with remote electronics housed ~80 feet away to minimize heat. The installation (nearly 10 ft × 15 ft) provides 800‑nit brightness, 1920×1080 per panel with 4K content handling, 5.5 mm tiled bezel and 3500:1 contrast to show 48‑hour solar activity in vivid detail. The Planar solution replaced a single 50‑inch screen, dramatically increasing visual impact, engaging and educating visitors, and is expected to run reliably 24x7x365 for at least five years for the museum’s eight million annual visitors.
