Shift, a San Francisco–based digital marketplace and end-to-end car concierge, was hampered by paper payments and manual processing that undermined its goals of convenience, value, and trust. To modernize the buying/selling experience, Shift turned to Plaid (in conjunction with Stripe), implementing Plaid’s Auth and Balance products to replace cash and cashier’s checks with secure online account authentication and balance verification.

Plaid’s Auth and Balance integrated with Stripe to authenticate accounts and check balances in real time, eliminating paper payments, reducing fraud risk, and cutting administrative and concierge costs. As a result, Shift reported a 10% increase in buyer NPS and roughly a 60% increase in on-the-spot conversions for non-financing customers in the month after integration, along with fewer follow-up appointments and lower processing expenses—helping Shift refocus on growth and expansion.
