A PlaceSpeak Case Study
The Municipality of North Cowichan, together with the City of Duncan, needed to engage residents in developing the University Village Local Area Plan (LAP) to translate the Official Community Plan into neighborhood-level policies for land use, urban form, mobility and infrastructure. To gather public input and let residents influence the plan’s vision, the municipality used PlaceSpeak’s online engagement platform.
PlaceSpeak provided discussion forums and a resource library where the Municipality uploaded open house summaries, newsletters, reports and public comments; the engagement produced 70 connected participants, 2,432 unique views and 40 comments. That PlaceSpeak-enabled consultation contributed to the LAP’s adoption by North Cowichan Council in July 2015 and its September 2015 UBCM award for Community Planning and Development.
