A PlaceSpeak Case Study
The City and Borough of Juneau faced requests to have the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee consider limits or a ban on fireworks in CBJ parks and needed broad, verifiable public input on options ranging from a total ban to limited size, dates, or times. To reach beyond people who attend meetings, the City used PlaceSpeak’s online engagement platform to solicit resident views and gather balanced feedback.
Using PlaceSpeak, CBJ posted bylaws and background materials, ran a discussion forum and a five-option poll, and set consultation boundaries to encourage respectful dialogue. The engagement generated 123 connected participants, 1,089 unique views, 58 comments and 120 poll responses, and informed the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee’s recommendation to prohibit fireworks on CBJ-managed parklands except on July 3–4, Dec 31–Jan 1, and other dates permitted by the Parks & Rec Director. PlaceSpeak’s tools helped the City reach a wider audience and capture more middle-ground perspectives.
